Meeting with the Blues – update from CBSC
17 April 2012
CBSC had a lengthy and constructive meeting with Richard Holland and Gwydion Griffiths of the Blues last week. As promised a detailed communication is being sent via email to our members over the next two days, and a high level summary of the discussion will be made available to everyone via this website within the next week. We’re delighted that Richard has agreed to attend our summer AGM to answer our members’ questions and more information on this will be sent to members in due course.
Current Situation at the Cardiff Blues - communications with management
A number of our members have raised questions and concerns with us over the last few weeks in respect of matters such as the player 'exodus', stadium location, future plans etc. CBSC have been in discussions with Richard Holland, Chief Executive in the last few weeks, which have answered some of our questions and a further meeting is being held this week.
These discussions so far have gone some way to reassuring our concerns but there are further questions we have - including those raised by our members at our Blues HQ's last weekend. We will be putting these questions to Richard and we will also be discussing future plans for CBSC and how the Blues can better support our organisation in future.
We will be communicating the outcomes of our discussions to our members via email in due course and we will welcome your feedback.
Thanks for your ongoing support and feedback - we will ensure that the concerns of our members are represented to those involved in the future direction of the Blues.
BLUES HQ's for Leinster vs Blues
Whilst the performance and result on the field was disappointing to say the least last week, CBSC's Blues HQ's in Cardiff and Dublin were a roaring success.
In Dublin - hundreds of travelling fans enjoyed the facilities in the marquee arrange by CBSC. The Sandymount was a great location, in the shadows of the Aviva Stadium and our 'Think Pink' theme worked a treat with a bright pink carpet, bunting and balloons complementing our pink tour tshirts and novelty hats. The relatively small group of us stood out in the crowd and we did our bit to cheer and sing the boys on, but it was to no avail. The team clearly appreciated our efforts as they came over to applaud us at final whistle - much to the annoyance of the Leinster fans whose winning team trotted straight into the tunnel. The marquee's own bar and burger station took a hammering pre and post match, and singing and dancing to live music was going on late into the night.
In Cardiff, at the Arms Park around 70 members and other guests watched Cardiff RFC and Ponty RFC battle it out in the afternoon in a regional 'warm up game to the QF game. Those supporters from Pontypridd had the better start to the day, with a comfortable win. The action then moved to The Pack Room where CBSC were on hand with the same novelty pink hats and a Guess The Score competition. The atmosphere was great but become somewhat muted as the game in Dublin quickly went beyond the grasp of the Blues but in true rugby spirit, the festivities continued in the Clubhouse and various pubs in the city centre.
Between the two events - CBSC raised more than £500 for our charity Ty Hafan. Thank you to you all for your genorosity for this wonderful charity.
Scarlets trip
Next up for CBSC is the trip to Parc-y-Scarlets on Saturday 5th May 2012. Join us for the last game of the season and cheer on the boys before the summer break!

Meeting with Gareth Baber
Blues coach Gareth Baber accepted CBSC’s invitation to join us at a committee meeting on 6 February 2012. We’d previously had a conversation with him, where he had asked us our views as a representative group of Blues supporters and we thought it opportune to get together for a chat. We already meet regularly with Blues Management but this was our first formal opportunity to meet with the coaches. First up was congratulations from us on the Blues reaching the Heineken Cup Quarter Finals and Gareth explained that it meant so much to the players to know that they were not only doing it for themselves but also their supporters. He said that the players were all talking about how good the support was at the home game at CCS against Racing Metro.
We discussed the facilities that are available to supporters at the CCS and that it is not the most social of environments and that we feel that this is a contributory factor as to why some supporters stay away, as rugby isn’t all about the 80 minutes of play. We explained that we have already talked to the Blues about what we can do differently from next season and that we are looking at bringing back things such as the Supporters’ Club Player of the Month, subject to us having somewhere suitable to present the awards. Gareth confirmed that this is a great way to bring supporters and players closer together. Additionally, he said that our suggestion of allowing supporters to cheer rather than playing music into the stadium, had been well received at the two recent games.
We also mentioned our plans for the rest of the season, focussing primarily on the ‘Blues HQ’ events that we are planning for the Quarter Final match, which proved very interesting and we extended an invite to Gareth, Justin and the players to join us in Dublin post match, if this is doable given other commitments they have after big games.
A very positive meeting and one we hope to repeat in future.
